Happy Birthday, Library of Congress!

Posted by theunquietlibrary on April 27, 2007

Did you know that April 24 marked the 207th birthday of the Library of Congress? According to James H. Billington, the Librarian of Congress, the Library of Congress is, “The nation’s oldest federal cultural institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, with more than 130 million items on approximately 530 miles of bookshelves. The collections include more than 29 million books and other printed materials, 2.7 million recordings, 12 million photographs, 4.8 million maps, and 58 million manuscripts.”

I bet you did not know that!  As many of you know from our research pathfinders, the Library of Congress is a terrific source for information and primary source documents, especially photographs from the American Memory Collection.  Check out the Library of Congress website and their new blog!
