Check out the great new SMITHTeens “Six Word” Memoirs” Contest and Literacy Event! Here is what SMITHTeens has to say about this FABULOUS event:
Our first book of six-word memoirs, Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs from Writers Famous & Obscure featured life stories from “I’m ten and have an attitude” to “Seventy years, few tears, hairy ears.” Clearly it’s a concept that spans generations. But some of our very favorite responses came from teenagers, those smart, sassy, angst-filled truth-tellers whose lives are changing by the minute. Next year, HarperTeen will publish a six-word memoir book just for them, written by memoirists who are 13 to 19 years old. Are you one? Submit here. Know one? Send them here.
Do you need ideas or inspiration?
We are also collecting six word memoirs at The Unquiet Library! You can participate in this contest by responding to this blog post—we will collect entries through October 31 and use your entries to create a visual art display. If you are interested in helping with the artistic entries, please see Mrs. Hamilton in the library.
When entering our version of the contest, remember these guidelines when posting your entry on our blog:
- First name only (or a pseudonym if you prefer); NO last names!
- Your email address (which will NOT BE PUBLISHED or visible to anyone)
- Type your entry—be sure to spell check before you paste it in.
- All entries must be your own original work.
- You must be an enrolled student at Creekview High School.
- Send in your entry by completing a “Leave a Reply” and submit comment in the box beneath this blog post.

The international system has witnessed dramatic changes in the recent past. Developments around the globe and at home challenge us to rethink the role of the United States in the international community. What is our nation’s place in this increasingly complex global picture? How do we best promote respect for human rights and the growth of freedom and justice? What can we do to nurture and preserve international security and world peace?
The National Peace Essay Contest:
- Promotes serious discussion among high school students, teachers, and national leaders about international peace and conflict resolution today and in the future;
- Complements existing curricula and other scholastic activities;
- Strengthens students’ research, writing, and reasoning skills; and
- Meets National Contents Standards.
The deadline for the 2007-2008 National Peace Essay Contest is February 1, 2008.

National PTA Reflections Program
National PTA believes all children deserve a quality arts education and encourages students to pursue artistic expression through participation in its annual arts Reflections Program. The program offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition. Students in preschool through grade 12 are encouraged to create and submit works of art in one or more of six areas: literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts (which includes art forms such as drawing, painting, print making, and collage), dance choreography and film/video production. In its more than 30-year history, the program has encouraged millions of students across the nation and in American schools overseas to create works of art.

Do you love reading? Check out the Letters About Literature Contest!
To enter, entrants must write a personal letter to an author, explaining how his or her work changed their view of the world or themselves. Students can select authors from any genre—fiction or nonfiction, contemporary, or classic. Sponsored by the Library or Congress’s Center for the Book and Target Stores, the reading and writing competition is open to kids in grades four through 12.
Judges representing each state will select the top essayists in three competition levels: Level I for readers in grades four through six; Level II for readers in grades seven and eight; and Level III for readers in grades nine through 12. Entries will be assessed according to three criteria: the writer’s ability to address the content theme, language skill, and style and originality.
State winners will receive a $50 Target gift card and will advance to the national competition. A panel of judges from the Center for the Book will select six national winners (two per competition level) and 12 national runners-up (four per competition level).
Each national winner will receive a $500 Target gift card and a Reading Promotion Grant of $10,000 for their school or community library—and have say in how the library funds will be spent. Each national runner-up will receive a $100 Target gift card and a Reading Promotion Grant of $1,000 for his or her school or community library.
The deadline for entries for the contest is December 14. To obtain a required entry coupon and a copy of “how to enter” guidelines, participants can visit the Letters About Literature Web site at www.loc.gov/letters or contact the national program director at lal@epix.net.
