Enders Game - Orson Scott Card
A young child, Andrew Ender Wiggin, is called upon for his brilliance to save the world as a military tactian against an unimaginable alien threat. As he progresses from his younger years, fearing his brother and loving his sister, he learns more and more. As time draws closer for the final invasion, his training is sped up, till the point when he almost burns out, Earths last chance, but little does he know the simulations he plays are real-time, with actual people and actual ships. In a last ditch attempt, he ends his training and the war. All in all, an extremely powerful work of science fiction, from the concept of xenocide to the very communication and weapons technology, the book is cutting edge, revolving in extreme social changes, a world under imagined seige, and death from above never before seen on this earth.
I think the book deserves a 5/5, first because of the broad subject range, and second because it follows the story of a lovable, yet unwitting boy who plays key in a terrible deed. It was excellent and read it numerous times, which is why I decided to write this review. I would recommend this to anyone, science fiction lover or not, an all around excellent peice of art.

Physical Therapy is one of the fastest growing jobs in the U.S. It doesn’t only pay good money, but it also gives you the opportunity to help people. Physical Therapy began long ago ; hot and cold packs were used as a source of therapy relief when someone got hurt. Theapist must be able to coach, praise, and show compassion to patients. Therapist need to be able to speak another language, preferably Spanish. You must go to school for 6 years and major in a form of science. The yearly pay is about $57,330. Hospitals and private doctors offices are grat places to get hired. Physical therapists are needed greatly and are one of a kind person.
I give this book a 4/5. It was very informative, but not entertaining to me. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to persue their career in physical therapy.

The “Great Women of the Civil War” starts off with a little bit of history/ background of the Civil War and contiunes on talking about women who played a major role in the Civil War. Harriet Beecher Stowe was the author of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” It is said the this book started the Civil War. Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tumban were two slaved who escaped to freedom during the Civil War period. Truth gave speeches about slavery and Tumban helped with the Undergroung Railroad. Clara Barton was a nurse and founder of the Red Cross. Secret spies were a big thing; Rose O’Neal Greenhoe, Mary Elizabeth Bowser, and Elizabeth Vanlew were just a few of the spies. This book is great for learning about the Civil War.
I would give this book a 5/5 because it is great for information and interesting. It shows that women are just as smart and helpful as men.

The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy is anything but average, and anything but a classic, capturing the essence of unhappiness in the now Defunct Soviet Union. A Soviet submarine captain and his most trusted officers plan to defect to the United States with the gift of the U.S.S.R.’s new submarine. Meanwhile, Jack Ryan, an unexpected new CIA agent, makes all effort to help the defecting Russians. In a fantastic deception, the Russian Navy is tricked, the submarine captured and the officers given assylum, summing up into an action packed adventure that will keep the reader on there seat till the very last page.
I thought this book was so good, it was Epic. The way the plot fit together, the realness of the characters, the actuallity of the situations, made it real and gut wrenching. An exquiste piece of work, I’d recommend it to any and all.
5/5

“A Year of Secret Assignments” by Jaclyn Moriarty
This book is written through the letters, diaries, and e-mails of its characters, which makes for interesting
reading. The three girls are students at Ashbury, a private school. The three boys are students at Brookfield, the public school across town that is Ashbury’s rival. The schools are both located in a town in Australia. As an assignment for their English classes, they are given a pen-friend from the other school that they are required to correspond with over the course of the year for part of their grade. The letters are completely confidential, so strange relationships begin to form between the three couples, leading to some very interesting turns of events. Cassie’s father had died the previous year, and she is still very fragile. When her pen-friend does something that completely devastates her fragile sense of self, the other characters in the story attempt to punish him, through a series of series of spy missions and failed plans for revenge.
There are several problematic issues that are addressed in this book, including drug use, underage
consumption of alcohol, suicide, skipping school, and revenge. There is also some talk of sex, as well as use of foul language. The discussions about the death of a parent also might upset some readers. Although it does hint on some of these subjects, I would most definately recommend this book to all high school girls.

“Carrie” by Stephen King
This is a story of a teenage girl with telekinetic powers. Carrie White is an outcast who is pushed beyond human limits when she is cruelly taunted in front of her entire class at her Senior Prom. After being battered with laughter, she unleashes her frightening power upon the small New England town of Chamberlain in 1979.
“Carrie” is a very suspenseful psychological thriller. It kept me on the edge of my seat, continuously awaiting the next mysterious suprise. At times it was quite intense, but I most definately recommend this book to anyone looking for a fright!

The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton
The plot seems to follow the path of a third person looking into the story. You follow the lives of five of the greatest scientists alive as they try to stop a deadly disease from spreading across the Earth. Along the way, statistics, breakdowns, and readouts are provided to let one better understand the nature of the fictious threat. The book draws from real life, with fiction in a few places. I recommend this book to anyone, a 5/5. What made it worthy was that it seemed so real, and so engrossing. All in all, an impressive work.

Deep Wizardry-Diane Duane
I love this book, ever since I started the young wizard series. Nita and her wizard partner Kit, are at the beach for some time off. But the Powers that Be have other plans. Nita and Kit get involved in an ancient ritual the Whale wizards have practiced for thousands of years. A ritual to bind the Lone Power whose power is entropy. Having ten Whale Lords and the Master Shark, the ritual is ready to commence. But Nita, playing the Silent Lord’s part, is shocked to realize the part she volunteered for requires her to die and be eaten by the The Master Shark. What will she do? Be eaten, or ruin the Song and let the Lone One out.

Calling on Dragons-Patricia C. Wrede
Part three of one of my favorite quartets, the Enchanted Forest Chronicles. It told from the point-of-view of an untraditional and practical witch:Morwen. The Society of Wizards are out to make trouble again. The Sword of the King has been stolen, the one thing that keeps the wizards from stealing magic, which kills the Forest. Morwen, the magician Telemain, a transformed rabbit, the King of the Dragons, the Queen of the Enchanted Forest, and three of Morwen’s nine cats. The magician’s tranportation spell is messed up and the party ends up in the Smoking Swamp
and then they find out that the wizards have an accomplice, an overly puffed-up traditionalist.
The sword is going to start leaking magic, which will harm the forest, and empower the wizards, making them almost unstopable.

Do you like Pirates of the Caribbean? If so, you will love this book. Jolly has an interesting ability that makes her invaluable to pirates. She is a Polliwog, a person who is able to walk on water. A portal that will releas creatures of dark nature from Mare Tenebrosum, an endless black sea. Also according to the Ghost Trader, the Polliwogs hold the key to sealing the Maelstrom.

Talking to Dragons-Oatricia c. Wrede
The final book in The Enchanted Forest Chronicles. This story is told from the point-of-view of Daystar (Cimorene’s son). He has lived next to the Enchanted Forest with his mother all his life. Normally his mother gives directions to people on quests to the Enchanted Forest. Now it is Daystar’s turn. That idiot wizard Antorell is back. And it only took him 17 years to find Cimorene. After melting him (again), Cimorene presents Daystar with a sword from the Forest and tells him to go to the Enchanted Forest and find out what he is supposed to do. Interesting task, isn’t it? In the Forest he meets a number of colorful characters, such as Morwen, a firewitch, and a dragon. Will Daystar find out what he is supposed to be doing in time?

The Game-Diana Wynne Jones
Diana Wynne Jones is an excellent author. She takes magic and makes it seem like an everyday occurence. This book ,The Game, takes an interesting aspect of human culture. It takes all myths and ledgends and stories and combines them into an everchanging fibrous world called the Mythosphere. Hayley has led a strictly ordered life, without stories and dreams. Until she meets a violin player and a flute player twins. When her grandmother finds out, she ships Hayley to a large family reunion. After breaking the ice with them, she is invited to participate in a game the children play. The Game is a sort of scavenger hunt, that takes place in the Mythospere. What adventures await her in this dazzling world of beauty and danger?

Of Mice and Men-John Steinbeck
I never thought i would read this book (believe me). This book reminds me of one of Sreinbeck’s other renowned books: the pearl. One of the things that impressedme about this novel (OMM) is how Steinbeck used such colorful language. I loved the Prince of the farm: Slim. I pittied Crooks: the crippled stable-buck. I especially feel sorry for the mad-man Lennie. The only vivtim of that mad-man I didn’t feel sorry for was that spoiled, paranoid, idiot Curley. He had it coming to him when Lennie crushed every bone in his hand. A shame about George, having to put up with that.

Monster Blood Tattoo-D.M. Cornish
Disgusting title isn’t it? Cornish takes readers to an extremely harsh world called the Half-Continent. Rosumand is a boy with a girl’s name. He is also a foundlind(or orphan). Teased and bullied, his only comfort is his nurse Verline and his mentors Craumpalin and Fransistart. Finally he is offered a job that will get him out of the Foundlingry(orphanage) and it seems so exciting. However this harsh world shows how harsh it is. After crossing smugglers, he discovers he has sympathy for the monsters of the wild. That is considered the worst thing for humans in this world. And it doesn’t help that he is traveling with a lightning-throwing monster slayer.

Hawksong-Amelia Atwater
For a world of Fantasy, it is incredibly realistic. There are entire countries of shapeshifters(people with a second form). This book focuses on two of these shapeshifting peoples. The Avian and the Serpiente. These contries have been at war for longer than anyone can remember. The reserved Avians and expressive Serpiente have been taught to hate the other before they learn to fly(or in the Serpiente case, slither). Danica ,the next ruler of the Avian, desires peace. After comforting a dying Serpiente prince, the next ruler of the Serpiente: Zane, requests that a truce be made. The meeting place is the neutral kingdom of the Tigers, and their ruler is an advisor to the truce to be made. Their Queen suggests the unthinkable. Danica Shardae and Zane Cobriana must wed!

The Jungle Book/Mowgli-Rudyard Kipling
It is nothing like Disney’s “The Jungle Book”. For one, Bagheera was not the one who found Mowgli. Mowgli walked into the wolves den after he was separated from his family by Shere-Khan’s attack. Shere-Khan is lame of foot, and is assisted by a jackal named Tabaqui. Baloo is not a hedonist, but teaches cubs the Law of the Jungle. Bagheera is not an unfotrtunate do-gooder, but quite possibly the most feared creature in the jungle. And Kaa doesn’t hypnotize through eye-contact, but rather by a hypnotic dance. And Mowgli was not tricked lead to the Man-village, but was banished from the wolf-pack by hot-headed youngsters.

Falcondance-Amelia Atwater
A very good book and sequel to Snakecharm. Nicias Silvermead is a Falcon, which are looked upon disfavorably in Wyvernn Court. Despite that, he is a personal Guard to the Wyvernn Princess Oliza. The Sea of Monsters-Rick Riordan
Percy Jackson is a half-blood. And not just a half-blood, but a son of Poseidon, the Sea God. Percy has actually had a quiet schoolyear(which is strange considering half-bloods attract monsters like magnets). After an attack from giant canibals, he returns to find Camp Half-blood in turmoil. The tree that protects the camp from monsters has been poisoned. ANd another thing, his only friend from school is a cyclops. And it doesn’t end there. Poseidon claims him as his son. Pendragon:The Merchant of Death-D.J. MacHale
Bobby Pendragon is about as normal as any popular jock can be. But what happens when he is about to set off for a big game and has just kissed his girl-friend? His mysterious uncle pops up and drags him off to another world. And quess what? A shapeshifter turns up trying to kill them. Actually this book has two points of view. One is with Bobby’s friends, and the other is with Bobby’s journals that his friends are reading after they are sent through a mini-flume or tunnel through time and space. I highly recomend this book.
December 23, 2007 at 4:32 am
The Lightning Thief-Rick Riordan
The thing I love about this book is that it shows how humans ignore the that which disagrees with their philosophies. In this book monsters, gods, and heroes exist all the time. Percy Jackson has led a depressing life. At every SPECIAL school he goes to, something goes wrong. For example his pre-algebra teacher tries to kill him(as a furie). And guess what every NORMAL person sees? Nothing, thats what. Its as if his pre-algebra teacher never existed. What other adventures await him that NORMAL people WON’T see as it is.
December 23, 2007 at 4:38 am
The Sea of Monsters-Rick Riordan
Ahh, another adventure of Percy Jackson. What new adventures await the son of Poseidon? Well for one before school ends he is attacked by giant cannibals. His school friend is apparently a cyclops(which happen to be children of Poseidon). Who knows what else awaits him. Will he get another quest? Will he save the day again? Read and find out.

One upon a Marygold-Jean Ferris
Do you like Shrek? A warped Fairy Tale world where everything abnormal seems normal? If not that, do you like romantic comedy? Either and both of these genres describe this book. A troll named Edric finds a boy that has run away from home. Having nowhere else to go, the boy stays with the troll. Now after tinkering with a giant telescope of his own design, the boy Christian becomes absolutely smitten with a girl named Marigold(hence the name). And what a cliche, she is the King’s youngest daughter. Ah, spying on his dream-girl, and trading P-mail(pigeon mail) and getting to know her every thought. How romantic. But everything is about to get bumpy. And unsuitable suiters and an obnoxious guard with a flirty girlfriend is the least of their worries. If you wish to know more, I’d suggest reading the book.

Dinotopia Lost-Alan Dean Foster
Yes, DINO-topia, a utopia of dinosaurs. I know, ludicrous, but an excellent book. Will Denison and his father: Arthur Denison are dolphinbacks, outsiders saved and brought in by dolphins. They are now full citizens of Dinotopia and are qiute well known throughout it. Arthur is a scientist and is insationably curious. Will is also insationably curious, but is drawn to the sky, and is quite a talented Skybax Rider apprentice. But now six years after washing up, another storm has brought in a ship of pirates seeking plunder. Thinking the remarkable creatures mere beasts, they capture a family of struthies. Eventually word reaches civilization, and Will is determined to save those struthies. One problem. The pirates wandered into the Rainy Basin: THE HOME OF THE LARGE CARNIVORES!

Dinotopia: The World Beneath-James Gurney
Yes, it is the sequal to Dinotopia. This picks up off of where journal #1 left off. Will and Arthur are enjoying their new live in Dinotopia. Particurlarly Will, being an Apprentice Skybax Rider. Arthur is still driven by boundless curiosity, and has become handy with machines. But he may be putting too much faith in machines. After an accident with a prototype flying machine, Arthur turns to a discovery he made in the world beneath Dinotopia. A stone that absorbs energy from the sun. With his head turned toward the Earth, Will instead goes on a mission to get medicine for a newborn triceratops. And the medicine is in The Rainy Basin: home to every large carnivore. Will and Arthur’s adventures are just as captivating as in the first book. It will not dissapoint Dinotopia fans.
